Anarchistická federace

Existence 2/2025: 30 years of the Anarchist Federation

cover

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of our anarchist federation. Naturally, we didn’t hesitate to make this milestone the central theme of the autumn issue of the anarchist revue Existence. Such an anniversary offers a valuable opportunity not only for reflection and reminiscence, but also for drawing important lessons.

In the opening article dedicated to the main theme, we explore how our federation came into being, how it eventually adopted the name Anarchist Federation, and how its ideological foundation evolved to align with the broader principles of social anarchism. We also describe the principles on which it operates, its internal structure, the development of its anarchist politics and their content, the evolution of our media and their strategic direction, the types of activities our members engage in, and the persistent myths surrounding our organization.

Additionally, one of the long-standing members shares key lessons learned over the federation’s history. His contribution addresses topics such as goals, motivation, ideology, activism, formal structures, individuality, mutual support, burnout, and other aspects of the federation’s life. The entire year of 2025 has been declared an opportunity for celebrations and various events marking the anniversary of the AF. We look back on the March gathering of current and former members, previous years’ celebrations, and a workshop focused on experience-sharing. The issue includes a survey featuring responses from eleven AF members on why organizing is important. In our commemorative section, we revisit the organizing of anarchist May Day events, the federation’s involvement in the International of Anarchist Federations (IFA), and a 1990s campaign to save regional railway lines.

In the theory section, we feature, among other pieces, translations of “The Abolition of Property” by M. L. Berneri, “David Graeber and Anarchism” by O. Alberola, and “Capitalism Does Not Give Everyone a Chance – But Anarcho-Communism Might” from The Slow Burning Fuse website. nfortunately, this issue also includes a number of obituaries. We pay tribute to J. Couzin, A. Failla, C. Durruti, H. Gómez, C. Jerwood, J. Tesař, G. Garbis, O. Alberola, and fallen fighters resisting the Russian invasion of Ukraine – S. Apukhtin, D. Chichkan, and Misjac. As always, we document events and developments within the Czech anti-authoritarian movement. This issue features reports on actions for women's and queer rights, in solidarity with resistance against Putinist fascism, in support of Israeli refuseniks and against the genocide in Gaza, against gentrification, in support of squatting and persecuted antifascists, for climate justice, and more. Extensive reports also cover the Prague May Day demonstration and the local Anarchist Bookfair. The AF also presents its recent activities in a dedicated section.

The issue continues with summaries of recent A3 wall-newspaper texts from the past six months, covering topics such as the rise of fascist tendencies, women’s rights, visions of a better world, squatting, the Bedřiška community, and the genocide of the people of Gaza.

The magazine concludes with reviews of Czech Anarchism at the Turn of the Century by V. Štěpán, and The Dawn of Everything by D. Graeber and D. Wengrow.
