Existence 3/2015

The main topic of this issue of anarchistic revue Existence deals with success. The topic reverberates the essay The Shock of Victory by David Graeber, an abridged version of which we publish here. Graeber makes an issue of the fact that the anarchists are often not able to admit their success. This essay is commented on in a review of the book Revolution in Reverse. Here Graeber’s attitude is described as some kind of psychotherapy – the optimistic view of one’s own activities as prevention of burnout and disappointment. Next follow-up article is based on the politics of Anarchistic Federation and it focuses on the structure of anarchistic goals and on activity as a project.

We commemorate also both bigger and smaller successes of the anarchistic movement in Bohemia after its resumption in 1989, especially in the area of squatting, autonomous spaces, antimilitarism, antifascism, solidarity, fight against the economic globalization or for the animal rights etc. This is followed up by a commentary on the six-month battle for the Prague’s autonomous social centre Klinika, and by an interview with a member of Antifascist Action. Another view of success is offered in Colin Ward’s text Quiet Revolutions.

A significant topic for the anarchistic movement in Bohemia is the contemporary wave of police repression. During the operation Fénix several activists were arrested and it turns out that police agents who infiltrated them played a considerable role in their charges. The column ABC comments on it by several appeals inside the movement and reminds of another case from the past (1992), when an anarchist was falsely accused of an attempt on a politician. Due to operation Fénix the websites of several groups are temporarily out of operation including the Anarchistic Federation.

Next we bring an interview with the Russian anarchist Ilja Falkovsky, the author of the book Invisible Murders which was published by Antifascist Action and Publisher AF. The column focusing on personalities commemorates the fate of Giuseppe Pinelli murdered by the Italian police in 1969. In an interview a group Food not Bombs from Karlovy Vary (city in western Bohemia) is presented. We also offer coverage on local events as the 1st May, anarchistic bookfair or a demonstration against TTIP, as well as texts from last three issues of the wall newspapers A3 and reviews on antiauthoritarian titles, including an extensive commentary on Bakunin’s book God and the State.
