Existence 2/2015

The spring issue of the anarchistic revue Existence responds to electoral success of the Greek left-wing party Syriza, thus the “ultra-left wing” becoming its main topic. We focus more on the anarchists’ relationship to it, than the ultra-left wing itself.

Therefore we remind the historical events when the anarchists stood against authoritarian streams of socialism. Again we raise the question of the possibility or impossibility of cooperation with the ultra-left wing, the adequacy of dealing with it to the exclusion of other issues, or the reaction to the success of new left-wing parties in Europe. We point out the anarchists’ experience with Trotskyists in the Czech environment and the fight against their influence in the anti-capitalist movement. The anarchistic Free Community VAP and the Initiative No to Racism! who claim to be its part, comment on their relationship with the ultra-left wing. Both groups proceed from their anti-authoritarian attitudes.

We have translated the text CrimethInc. that was published at the time of Syriza’s victory. It anticipates the party to be able to change things via parliament, and it warns that the party’s failure may cast many people towards fascism. An article by Sylvain Pattieu depicts the time of temporary cooperation between anarchists and Trockyists during the Algerian war for independence. The Russian social activist Dmitrij Žvanija describes in his memories the practice of the French Trockyists at the beginning of the 90ties and Gabriel Kuhn opposes the prejudice of Alain Badiou and Slavoj Žižek against anarchism in his essay Anarchistic hypothesis.

Apart from the main topic we deal with the events in Ukraine which are analysed by the Russian historian and anarcho-syndicalist Vadim Damje. An interview from 2013 about the experience of organizing people’s self-government in Athens goes back to the topic of plena discussed in one of the previous issues of Existence. We also mention recent fight for public transport and affordable housing in the world. You can also read an interview with an activist from Anarchist Black Cross and a review of the first year’s activities of the FNB in Hradec Králové. Once again there is a review of the activities of the local anti-authoritarian movement during the last quarter emphasizing the fight for the Klinika centre in Prague, and the articles of the last three issues of the wall newspapers A3, as well as reviews of magazines and books (e.g. new works by Noam Chomsky or David Graeber).
